Dementia and memory rehabilitation

What we do

It is common for people to find themselves in a limbo situation after they have been told by a doctor that they have dementia. They are starting to find some activities difficult but not to a level that homecare is needed, and they are finding that they need more strategies and help with their memory.

If they are lucky, they are referred to and be seen by the memory clinic but unfortunately it is too common that these appointments are becoming few and far between. Due to the strain on statutory services, memory clinics are more frequently only able to see people at crisis point. People with dementia can often find themselves between a ‘rock and a hard place’ where they are too good for statutory support, and they can feel like their only option is to wait for an inevitable deterioration of their condition.

Our dementia specialist rehabilitation team can provide therapeutic exercises both physically and cognitively to help the person maintain their skills and continue with their daily routines.
This service is assessed and overseen by consultant occupational therapist and can be provided in the person’s own home or within our wellbeing clinic.

This service is designed to bridge the gap between diagnosis and NHS support and can be used whenever required.

Why choose us?

Our Occupational Therapists specialise in cognitive difficulties and function and are able to identify the roots causes for the challenges a client experiences. From this assessment we are able to recommend intervention that will help the client to reduce the impact of the issues, enabling the client to maintain their independence for as long as possible.

Our specialist rehabilitation team not only has Occupational Therapists, but we also have occupational therapy technicians and rehabilitation assistants who are highly skilled in delivering therapeutic programmes.

A Client’s intervention is designed by a clinical specialist but can be delivered by a technician or even an assistant which means we can reduce the cost of your support which means you can get more for your money.
We are always looking to enable the client to become their own therapist, and the goal is to help the client and their family to deliver their own intervention whenever possible. This is why we have developed a training programme to enable the client/family to objectively understand how the dementia symptoms impact on them and how best to manage them. (this is the same training programme our OTs provide to other care agencies for their staff).

Added bonus.

Did you know that physical exercise and balance exercises are key to maintaining attention and memory skills in people with dementia. The difficulty is that most commercial gyms do not cater for people with dementia. These gyms are often over stimulating confusing and on many occasions intimidating and this results in people with dementia losing out on a vital treatment.

In our wellbeing centre we have a fitness and treatment suite where a person can complete exercises and balance treatment away from the oppressive commercial gym environment and with specialist trainers who can respond to the needs of people with even advanced levels of dementia.
